Association between polymorphisms in the APOB gene and hyperlipidemia in the Chinese Yugur population BJMBR
Gu,Q-L.; Han,Y.; Lan,Y-M.; Li,Y.; Kou,W.; Zhou,Y-S.; Hai,X-J.; Yan,B.; Ci,C-H..
We investigated the influence of apolipoprotein B gene (APOB) variants on the risk of hyperlipidemia (HL) in 631 middle-aged and elderly members of the Chinese Yugur population (HL, n=336; normolipidemia, n=295). APOB polymorphisms were identified using mass spectrometry, and five single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs1042034, rs2163204, rs512535, rs676210, and rs679899) and serum lipids were further analyzed. rs1042034 and rs676210 were significantly associated with HL (P<0.05). Compared with the GG or AA genotype, individuals with AG and AG+AA in rs1042034 and with AG and AG+GG in rs676210 had a 1.67-fold (95%CI=1.20–2.33),1.63-fold (95%CI=1.19–2.24), 1.72-fold (95%CI=1.24–2.40), and 1.67-fold (95%CI=1.21–2.291) increased risk of high HL, respectively....

Effect of a cholesterol-rich diet on the metabolism of the free and esterified cholesterol components of a nanoemulsion that resembles LDL in rabbits BJMBR
Padoveze,A.F.; Maniero,F.; Oliveira,T.V.; Vitorio,T.S.; Couto,R.D.; Maranhão,R.C..
We have shown that the free cholesterol (FC) and the cholesteryl ester (CE) moieties of a nanoemulsion with lipidic structure resembling low-density lipoproteins show distinct metabolic fate in subjects and that this may be related to the presence of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. The question was raised whether induction of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis in rabbits would affect the metabolic behavior of the two cholesterol forms. Male New Zealand rabbits aged 4-5 months were allocated to a control group (N = 17) fed regular chow and to a 1% cholesterol-fed group (N = 13) during a 2-month period. Subsequently, the nanoemulsion labeled with ³H-FC and 14C-CE was injected intravenously for the determination of plasma kinetics and tissue uptake of the...

Exploring the shared genes of hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia based on microarray BJPS
Dong,Wenzhu; Chen,Hangping; Wang,Lu; Cao,Xiaoqian; Bu,Xiawei; Peng,Yan; Dong,Aiqing; Ying,Mengjiang; Chen,Xu; Zhang,Xin; Yao,Li.
Given their relationship with metabolic syndrome and systematic inflammatory diseases, the pathogenesis of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia is closely related. To explore the common genes among these three conditions, spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR), spontaneous diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rats (GK) and hyperlipidemia rats (HMR) were reared for experiments. Gene array was used to identify the genes of SHR, GK and HMR compared with normal Wistar rats using TBtools software. First, real-time PCR was applied to verify these genes, and Cytoscape software was used to construct networks based on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. Second, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database analysis was performed...

Gomes,Júlia Ariana de Souza; Faria,Bruno Generoso; Silva,Viviam de Oliveira; Zangerônimo,Márcio Gilberto; Miranda,José Rafael; Lima,Adriene Ribeiro de; Pereira,Rosemary Gualberto Fonseca Alvarenga; Pereira,Luciano José.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of integral and decaffeinated coffee brews (Coffea arabica L and C. canephora Pierre) on the metabolic parameters of rats fed with hyperlipidemic diet. Thirty male Wistar rats (initial weight of 270 g ± 20 g) were used in the study, which were divided into six groups five each. The treatments were normal diet, hyperlipidemic diet, hyperlipidemic diet associated with integral coffee arabica or canephora brews (7.2 mL/kg/day) and hyperlipidemic diet associated to decaffeinated arabica, or canephora brews, using the same dosage. After 41 days, performance analyses were conducted. The rats were then euthanized and the carcasses were used for the analysis of dried ether extract and crude protein....

Silva,Gisleine Elisa Cavalcante da; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa; Curi,Rui; Silva,Maria Angélica Rafaini Covas Pereira da.
The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors to coronary heart disease in two countryside villages in the State of Paraná, southern Brazil, typical in terms of the poverty and lack of access to public health care. All population was invited to participate in the study. The 462 volunteers (61.3% female, mean age = 42 years) showed high prevalence of hypercholesterolemia (7.0%), hypertriglyceridemia (19.0%), hyperglycemia (11.0%), hypertension (30.0%) and obesity (16.0%). The majority of the individuals, during the interview did not report the diseases detected by the testes. The results revealed that the high prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus could be consequence of the delayed...

Lipid accumulation product index in HIV-infected patients: a marker of cardiovascular risk BJID
Guimarães,Milena Maria Moreira; Greco,Dirceu Bartolomeu; Moreira,Allyson Nogueira; Guimarães,Nathalia Sernizon; Freire,Cláudia Maria Vilas; Rohlfs,Bruna Guimarães; Machado,Lucas José de Campos.
ABSTRACT The lipid accumulation product (LAP) index is an emerging cardiovascular risk marker. We aimed to assess the accuracy of this index as a marker of cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients. A cross-sectional study of 133 HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral drugs and 20 non-infected controls was conducted at the outpatient clinic of a referral center of infectious and parasitic diseases. Evaluations included LAP index, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, glucose tolerance test, and cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Body mass index (BMI) was similar in both groups; however, waist circumference was greater in the HIV-infected patients. Triglyceride levels were significantly higher (p <...

Protective effects of Spirulina on the liver function and hyperlipidemia of rats and human BABT
El-Sheekh,Mostafa Mohamed; Hamad,Saied Mohamed; Gomaa,Mahmoud.
In the present study, the effects of Spirulina on subchronic treatments (two weeks) of hyperlipidemia and liver function of the rats and humans were investigated. The hyperlipidemia was induced in the rats using 25% of soya bean oil and 25% butter. The butter induced more hyperlipidemia than soya bean oil. Spirulina was used at the concentrations of 0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10 % of diet weight of the rats. The decrease in hyperlipidemia by Spirulina was dependent on its concentration in the diet. In case of human studies, about four g/day of Spirulina was taken via oral administration by Egyptian volunteers patients with hyperlipidemia. Spirulina decreased the levels of hyperlipidemia in these patients. The effects were dependent on the amount and number of...

Relationship of cyclosporin and sirolimus blood concentrations regarding the incidence and severity of hyperlipidemia after kidney transplantation BJMBR
Spinelli,G.A.; Felipe,C.R.; Machado,P.G.; Garcia,R.; Casarini,D.E.; Moreira,S.R.; Park,S.I.; Tedesco-Silva Jr.,H.; Medina-Pestana,J.O..
The influence of drug concentrations on the development of persistent posttransplant hyperlipidemia was investigated in 82 patients who received cyclosporin A (CsA) and prednisone plus sirolimus (SRL) (52) or azathioprine (AZA) (30) during the first year after transplantation. Blood levels of CsA and SRL, daily doses of AZA and prednisone, and cholesterol, triglyceride, and glucose concentrations were determined during each visit (pretransplant and 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, and 360 days posttransplant). Persistent hyperlipidemia was defined as one-year average steady-state cholesterol (CavCHOL) or triglyceride (CavTG) concentrations above 240 and 200 mg/dL, respectively. Mean cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations increased after transplantation (P <...

The APOB rs693 polymorphism impacts the lipid profile of Brazilian older adults BJMBR
Alves,E.S.; Henriques,A.D.; Tonet-Furioso,A.C.; Paula,R.S.; Gomes,L.O.; Moraes,C.F.; Nóbrega,O.T..
The apolipoprotein B (APOB) gene contains several polymorphic sites described as risk modifiers for cardiovascular events. The objective of this study was to verify the association of the classic APOB Xba I polymorphism (rs693) with atherosclerotic risk factors in a segment of the Brazilian elderly population considering their usual dietary intake. Clinical and biochemical characteristics as well as total caloric and fat intake data were determined from 644 elderly individuals. Polymorphism analysis was performed by conventional polymerase chain reaction followed by enzyme restriction. Statistical analyses compared measures and proportions according to different APOB genotypic combinations. Statistically significant association was found between Xba I...
